Leaving
Doing your tax return once you've left Australia
Updated 2026-06-16
You can lodge your Australian return from anywhere in the world through myGov, as long as you can still sign in. The two things people lose access to are a working myGov sign-in (set up a method that works abroad, not an SMS code to an Australian number you'll cancel) and an Australian bank account for the refund.
If you're leaving partway through a financial year and won't return to work, you can lodge an early "part-year" return before you go, rather than waiting until after 30 June. And remember your superannuation is a separate claim (DASP) made after your visa ends.
FAQ
- Should I lodge before or after I leave?
- Either works. An early part-year return lets you finish before you go; otherwise lodge from overseas after 30 June. Keep myGov access and an AU bank account either way.
