Refund
How long until my tax refund arrives?
Updated 2026-06-16
Most returns lodged online through myTax are processed within about two weeks. Paper returns take much longer. The refund is paid by bank transfer to the Australian account you entered, so you need a valid AU account, refunds aren't sent overseas or by cheque.
What slows it down: lodging in the first days of July before your income statements are "tax ready", a mismatch between what you entered and what the ATO holds, an old debt being offset, or being picked for a manual check. You can see the status under the ATO section of myGov.
FAQ
- Can my refund go to an overseas bank account?
- No, the ATO pays income tax refunds to an Australian bank account. Keep one open until your refund lands.
