Claiming uniform and laundry as a backpacker
Updated 2026-06-16
Work clothing is claimable when it's protective (steel-cap boots, hi-vis, gloves), a compulsory branded uniform, or occupation-specific, not plain clothes you happen to wear to work. If your clothing qualifies, so does washing it.
The ATO accepts a simple laundry rate: $1 per load if it's only work clothing, or 50c per load if washed with other clothes. Up to $150 of laundry can be claimed without written evidence (this sits inside the broader $300 no-receipt limit for total work expenses).
FAQ
- Can I claim my farm work boots?
- Yes, protective footwear like steel-cap boots for farm or site work is claimable. Keep the receipt if your total work expenses exceed $300.
