Claiming car use for work as a backpacker

Updated 2026-06-16

If you use your own car for work, driving between two job sites, between farms, or to pick up supplies, you can claim it. The simplest method is the cents-per-kilometre method: 88 cents per work kilometre, capped at 5,000 km per year. You don't need fuel receipts, but you do need to be able to show how you reached the number (a diary of work trips, for example).

The drive from your home to your regular workplace is private and not claimable, even if it's long and rural. Only genuine work travel counts.

FAQ

How much is the per-km rate?
88 cents per work kilometre, up to 5,000 km a year under the cents-per-km method. Above that you'd need the logbook method.
