ABN for food delivery and rideshare: what backpackers need

Updated 2026-06-16

Food delivery (Uber Eats, DoorDash, Menulog) and rideshare treat you as running your own small business, so you need an ABN. It's free to get at abr.gov.au. No tax is withheld from your earnings, which is the part that catches people out.

Set aside a portion of every payout for tax, because you'll owe it at the end of the year on your total income. Track your business expenses (fuel, phone, bike or car running costs, bags), they reduce what you're taxed on. One special rule: rideshare drivers must register for GST from the first dollar, but food-delivery-only riders don't unless they pass $75,000.

FAQ

Does Uber Eats withhold tax for me?
No. As a sole trader on an ABN, nothing is withheld. You save for the tax yourself and settle it on your annual return.
Do delivery riders need to register for GST?
Food-delivery-only riders register for GST only above $75,000 turnover. Rideshare drivers must register from the first dollar.
